INTERNATIONAL MIGRATORY BIRD DAY: TROPICS TO TUNDRA
Saturday, May 10, 2008
The Everhart Museum participated in International Migratory Bird Day for the first time this
year by hosting a family friendly program for all ages. Migratory Bird Day is an annual
international event designed to bring awareness to the birds that make fantastic journeys
around the world, the habitats on which they depend, and the people who help conserve these
birds. As part of the day of awareness the Museum organized an afternoon of bird-related
activities such as: guided bird walks around the Museum and through Nay Aug Park; a migration
activity for children provided by the Lackawanna Environmental Institute; a fly tying session
instructed by Ted Patlen; and bird banding demonstrations led by Dr. Rob Smith and Dr. Meg
Hatch. A close-up look of live raptors from The Endless Mountains Nature Center's "Raptors
Rule" program ended the day's activities. A crowd of attendees gathered to see and learn about
Screech Owls, a Red Tail Hawk and a Barred Owl. The event was so popular that the Museum plans
on participating in the event again next year on the second Saturday in May 2009.

THE WALL THAT HEALS
November 8 - November 12, 2007
Veterans Day 2007 marked the 25th anniversary of the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans'
Memorial in Washington, DC. In honor of this special event and as a complement to the Vietnam
exhibitions which were on display at the Everhart, the museum presented “The Wall That Heals
(TWTH),” a half-scale replica of the memorial. This dramatic replica was installed in Scranton's
Nay Aug Park for free 24-hour/day viewing for five days. An estimated 14,000 people visited
Nay Aug to view this powerful memorial, which lists more than 58,000 names of people killed or
missing in action. A Traveling Museum and Information Center, providing a venue for people to
learn about friends and loved ones lost in the war, accompanied TWTH. The Everhart is grateful
to everyone who helped make this event possible.
