CENTENNIAL SCAVENGER HUNT INTERNATIONAL MIGRATORY BIRD DAY: TROPICS TO TUNDRA Saturday, May 10, 2008; 1:00-4:00 Free with paid admission “Tropics to Tundra” is this year's theme for International Migratory Bird Day. Join the Everhart Museum as we host this annual international event. We will explore the birds that make fantastic journeys around the world, the habitats on which they depend, and the people who help conserve these birds. The Everhart Museum will be leading a guided bird walk, the Lackawanna Environmental Institute will be instructing a migration activity for children and Rob Smith will be leading bird banding sessions. Also, get an up-close look at a Screech Owl, a Red Tail Hawk and an American Kestrel by attending The Endless Mountains Nature Center's “Raptors Rule” program. All ages. Free with paid admission. THE U.S. NAVY BAND SEA CHANTERS CONCERT AT THE MELLOW THEATER Friday, May 30, 2008; 7:30 pm As part of the Everhart’s special Centennial activities, the Museum is honored to present the U.S. Navy Sea Chanters in concert at the Mellow Theater on Friday, May 30, 2008 at 7:30 pm. The U.S. Navy Band Sea Chanters chorus is the official chorus of the United States Navy. The ensemble performs a variety of music ranging from traditional choral music, including the sea chantey, to Broadway musicals. The event is sponsored in part by Wachovia Securities, The Mellow Theater at Lackawanna College and the Everhart Museum. The concert is free and open to the public. EVERHART MUSEUM'S CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION June 1, 2008; 1:00-4:00 pm Join the Everhart on June 1st for fun-filled activities to honor and celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Everhart Museum! A rededication ceremony will begin at 1:00 pm and will feature local speakers and music by Doug Smith and his Dixieland Allstars. Travel back to 1908 with us as we partake in activities designed to pay homage to Dr. Everhart and his wonderful museum. Meander through the Museum and Nay Aug Park on a guided tour to learn about the early years of the Museum and the changes to it and the landscape surrounding it. Enjoy modern touches such as face painting for children by Happy Faces from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Stop by from 2:00 to 3:00 pm for an old fashioned ice cream social provided courtesy of Manning's Ice Cream & Milk. And from 3:00 to 3:30 pm, listen to the harmonizing sounds of F.O.G. (Four Old Geezers), a barbershop quartet, who will transport you back to the "good old days" with songs from the past. Free admission to the Museum all day. Our 3rd annual Sunday in the Park is a collaborative event put on by the Everhart Museum, Lackawanna County Library System, and the Scranton Cultural Center for children and their families. This event is free and will feature hands on interactive projects, crafts, face-painting, games, raffles and live musical performances. This year will highlight the natural world focusing on the libraries summer theme Catch the Reading Bug and the Everhart's summer exhibition Art of the Land. No reservations are required. Docent led Art of the Land exhibit tours, naturalist led interpretive walks in the park, recycled craft activities and more brought to you by the Everhart Museum, Lackawanna County Library System and Scranton Cultural Center. Historian Paul Rosier will be joining us to present From Earth Day to Global Warming: A Modern Environmental History of Pennsylvania, an interactive program funded in part by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council and designed to provide participants with an overview of important environmental issues affecting Pennsylvania including a review of why Pennsylvania produces 1% of the world's greenhouse emissions.
