Fancy yourself a birdwatcher? If so, then you know why a birdfeeder is a great thing to have around your house. THe birds fly right up to it, so you can study them as long as you like (or at least until they fly away!). The easiest type of birdfeeder to make is with a pinecone, covered in peanut butter, and rolled in birdseed. Yum! If you want to get a little trickier, however, check out this feeder made from a soda bottle:

What You'll Need:
  • a plastic two-liter soda bottle or a milk jug (keep the lids!)

  • scissors

  • string or wire

  • dowel
  • birdseed

How You Do It:
  1. Wash the soda bottle or milk jug, then dry it well.

  2. With the help of an adult, cut a hole in the side of the bottle. It should be big enough that a bird can pop it's head in, but not so big that rain or snow can get in easily.

  3. Poke several small holes in the bottom of the bottle so water can drain out, if necessary.

  4. Poke two holes in the bottle, one below the hole, the second on the opposite side.

  5. Slide the dowel through the two holes. This is the bird's perch.

  6. Tie the string around the neck of the bottle, with enough left over to hang it from a branch.

  7. Fill the bottom half of the container with birdseed.

  8. Hang the bottle from a branch, clothesline, fence, or other place where you can watch the birds. Make sure it's high enough that predators (like cats) can't reach it.

  9. Wait for your feathered friends to stop by for a bite to eat! Make sure your feeder stays fresh and full, and if it gets worn down, recycle it and make a new one!
