Loving Cup Vase
C. Dorflinger & Sons, White Mills, PA ca. 1900 - 1921
colorless and green lead blown and cut glass
Gift of Mr. and Mrs. William L. Connell, Jr., 70.10

Dorflinger glass was produced in White Mills, Pennsylvania, from 1865 to 1921. The factory, founded by Christian Dorflinger, was renowned for its cut glass and stemware. The business reached its peak in 1903, employing 700 men. The prestige of the factory was enhanced by its reputation for fine tableware that was sought after by eight American Presidents, from Abraham Lincoln to Woodrow Wilson, and selected European royalty.

This vase was made by dipping hot clear lead glass, wrapped in hot green lead glass, into a mold and blowing it in the flared cylindrical shape. The vase was then pulled out of the mold and the glass handles were applied. Once the vase had annealed, or cooled, the vase was cut with copper wheels to expose the clear layer beneath the green glass. This type of glass is known as rich cut glass and was very popular in the United States and Europe ca. 1890-1920.
