Born in 1927 in Brooklyn, New York, Alex Katz is a painter, sculptor, and printmaker. Katz has experimented in a variety of artistic styles and mediums throughout his career. He is best known for his flatly colored, dramatically cropped, realistic portraits. Katz first studied at the Cooper Union Art School from 1946 to 1949, when he enrolled in the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. He had his first solo show at the Roko Gallery in New York in 1954. One year later, he began to make his first collages. This portrait is done on a flat wooden sculpture.
