Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa umbellus)
Range: Alaska, Canada, United States of America
Collection of the Everhart Museum

Adopted in 1931 as the Pennsylvania State Game Bird, the Ruffed Grouse gets its name from the male’s distinctive neck feathers. Also known as a partridge, this bird is easily recognized by the territorial drumming of the male announcing his location to prospective mates during the spring breeding season. The Ruffed Grouse is a ground nesting bird, preferring quiet woods to open fields.
