Abstract art is art which doesn't quite look real. For example, the camera on this page is abstracted, in a sense, because it's been broken down into simple parts and doesn't look really real.

Lots of times people wonder why artists make abstract art. There's lots of different reasons. Sometimes artists are trying to show something you can't actually see, like ideas or a spirit. Other times, the artist wants to express emotions. Think of how hard it is sometimes to talk when you're mad. If you could draw instead of explaining your feelings, what would "mad" look like? And sometimes abstract art just makes you, the viewer, look at something in a different way.

What You'll Need:
  • measuring cup

  • mixing bowl

  • spoon

  • cake pan
  • at least three colors of food coloring

  • extra bowls for mixing colors
  • white cake mix (including all the ingredients listed on the box - eggs, oil, etc.)

How You Do It:
  1. After gathering everything you need, mix the cake batter in the bowl according to the instructions on the box.

  2. Divide the batter into three bowls (or more, if you're using more colors).

  3. Add a few drops of food coloring to each bowl (i.e., one might be green, one might be red, and the third might be blue). Mix each bowl until the color is blended in.

  4. Using a large spoon, drip and pour the colored batter into the cake pan. Make whatever kind of design you'd like. After all, you're creating an abstract masterpeice!

  5. Bake your cake according to the directions on the cake mix box.

  6. Voila! An artwork that's good enough to eat!
